Inspiring Women - Inspiring Windows

Our Inspiring Women - Inspiring Windows drawing challenge invited children to celebrate International Women’s Day by drawing a woman who inspires them and displaying it in their window for passers by to enjoy.

Local artist, Karen Vost, worked with 5 Thanet primary schools to engaged pupils aged 7 - 10 introducing them to International Women’s Day and exploring who are inspiring women to them. They were invited to draw a woman they find inspiring, accompanied by a sentence explaining their choice. This project engaged 364 children in the workshops and a total of 1000 took part in creating Inspiring Women portraits.

Karen promoted equality by introducing the children to the idea of International Women’s Day and to Power of Women’s work, and encouraged the children to share stories of the women they admire - in their own lives and/or public/historic figures.

Karen and the schools selected 16 - 20 drawings per school that were then formatted by a graphic designer and printed as A0 vinyls for public display on Turner Contemporary’s terrace throughout March 2022.

Head teacher Hannah Tudor, Newington Community School, Ramsgate said  “Lots of work is going into raising awareness of gender equality around the world and this is important to break down stereotypes and ensure girls feel empowered to thrive and achieve.

“Seeing the children get so highly involved and animated in their discussions about women who inspire them has been such a wonderful thing to see.

“We are so proud of our children’s work and their creative efforts. It’s always lovely to see their work in school, but it is incredible to know that their drawings can be seen by other people too – the children are very excited.”

Headteacher Adnan Ahmet, Ellington Infant School, Ramsgate said “It was great to be involved, and for such a worthy purpose as well… We would be more than happy to be involved in any other collaborations with POW as it’s purpose is something we as a school are very much in agreement with.”
