Welcome to the 2024/25 Young Producers programme 🥳

This mentee programme is close to our hearts here at POW, because being able to nurture the next generation of creative talent is central to what we do. From September through to March, the Young Producers join us as part of the POW team, as they plan, develop and create their own podcast & listening party as part of our 10th International Women’s Day Festival 💃🎉

Meet, Abi, Lia and Ryo

Abi

“ I've always used art as a way to express myself, as I struggle to do so in other ways. It's how I communicate with, and perceive, the world. I aim to connect with people through art, and help others connect with each other, and find their voices, so that we can all have a better tomorrow. It's the humans duty to create in this world, as the future is in our expression, so express as much, and unapologetically, as you can! ”

LIA

“ Hi, I’m Lia, and I am working with POW this year as part of their mentee program. I am currently studying Art & Design LVL 3 year 2, with the intention to go to uni to study Fashion Atelier and Tailoring. I love photography because I get to show people how I see things. I also really love to read and enjoy reading when it is rainy outside. Outside of my creative interests I play rugby and workout as way to relax. ”

RYO

“ To me, gender equality is about creating an inclusive environment where people of all identities have the same rights, chances, and access to resources. It means getting rid of discrimination and unfair treatment based on gender, making sure everyone is treated fairly in all aspects of life like education, work, health care etc. I also feel it highlights the value of different experiences / viewpoints and involves breaking down unfair systems and questioning cultural norms that keep gender gaps alive. ”

ABOUT THE YOUNG PRODUCERS.

Pioneered by POW Thanet, the Young Producers program is a transformative initiative aimed at addressing Thanet's high youth unemployment rate of 9.4%. Designed to nurture the creative talents of Thanet's youth, this program serves as a launchpad for careers in the arts, music, media, and drama sectors. By offering hands-on experience and mentorship, we're changing lives and reshaping futures.

“This program has opened doors I never knew existed. It’s more than an opportunity; it’s a life-changer.”

Let’s Grow a resilient and creative Thanet

Your donations are crucial in sustaining and expanding the talent, skills and ideas of Thanet’s Youth. Running since 2020, this programme has changed the lives of Young People in Thanet, and with your support we can continue this work for years to come.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

  • The Young Producers program is a beacon of hope and opportunity in Thanet in partnership with Broadstairs College and the wider East Kent Colleges Group. Since its inception, the program has focused on bridging the gap between aspiration and reality for the youth in our community.

  • This 7-month journey encompasses various creative disciplines, catering to students passionate about the arts, music, media, and drama. Susan, our experienced Youth Producer and Mentor, oversees the program and ensures each mentee receives personalised guidance. The program is rooted in principles of equity, feminism, and inclusivity, focusing on providing equitable workplace placements.

  • Reduced Unemployment

: The program has significantly lowered youth unemployment in Thanet.

    Educational Impact

There has been a notable increase in university attendance and career aspirations among participants.

  • Participants engage in diverse roles, such as:

    • Engaging with local businesses

    • Leading public speaking initiatives

    • Creating compelling social media and podcast content

    Projects Showcase

    • Digital Creativity

: Includes a display of digital maps, blog posts crafted by our producers, and the creation of their own podcast for International Women's Day in partnership with Ramsgate Radio.

  • According to the DCMS, the creative economy employs a lower proportion of women than the broader UK economy, with only 37.1% of jobs in the creative industries filled by women compared to 46.9% in the UK as a whole.

The disparity is even more pronounced in leadership roles, with overwhelmingly male creative directors (96.4% in 2008). A survey by the Young Creative Council in 2016 revealed that 88% of young female creatives feel they lack role models, and 70% have never worked with a female creative director or executive creative director. This progra aims to address these gaps by empowering young women and providing strong female role models in the creative industries.

I’ve found my voice and confidence through Young Producers.
