Summer has arrived and we’re feeling a big energy boost in the office this week as we start laying the foundations of POW! 2020.

Thanks to all who submitted an Expression of Interest for next year’s programme, it was our biggest response yet and we are enjoying looking through all your proposals #powerofwomen.

New POW! events and collaborations

On 10th August, POW! will be marching for Margate Pride and we invite you to join us. Even better, come along first to the launch of our POW! social events at Margate Arts Club on 1st August from 6pm-9pm, where we’ll be making beautiful POW! Pride banners, led by our Performance Curator and Margate Pride co-Director, Amy Redmond. These events will be happening regularly in the months leading up to International Women’s Day and POW! 2020. Last week, POW! was invited to be part of the annual ‘Best of Thanet’ showcase, hosted by Westwood Cross and collaborated with artist Margo McDaid (Margo in Margate) to display and sell a selection of prints featuring Margo’s universal messages of female empowerment, ‘Be Kind’, ‘Be Brave’.
We asked people ‘What does feminism mean to you?’ and received a dozen or so comments.

From our friends

The Ramsgate Festival Of Sound 2019 features a raft of female artists among it's headline acts this year including World famous percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie and artists who have featured in previous POW! festivals including jazz singer Sabina Desir, keyboard player Jessica Lauren and sound artist Emily Peasgood.

The festival takes place between 20th and 28th July in venues across the town and on 25th July, Dame Evelyn Glennie will be performing alongside Trio HLK. A virtuoso multi-percussionist, Glennie has been profoundly deaf since the age of 12, but is one of the UK’s most recognised classical performers who has worked alongside Bjork and Underworld and was invited to lead 1000 drummers in the Opening Ceremony to the London Olympics Games 2012.  Tickets are selling fast. We’re delighted to hear that Brigitte Aphrodite is presenting her new musical ‘Parakeet’ at The Edinburgh Festival Fringe. ‘Parakeet’ premiered at Elsewhere, Margate, as part of the closing event for POW! 2019. Tickets are available here

Have a great July, from all of us at POW!

xx
